Blowing Stuff Up (PG version)
In Room 9 this week, we have been learning about chemistry and reactions. On Tuesday we completed the CO2 Sandwich Experiment.
In this experiment, we mixed 60ml of warm water and vinegar in a snap lock back. We then wrapped a teaspoon of baking soda in tissue. The next step, was to put the baking soda in the bag of vinegar...
Our first observations were that there was a lot of fizzing when the vinegar solution met the baking soda. Next the bag started to fill with air. This was actually CO2 (aka carbon dioxide) being released from the ACID-BASE reaction of the baking soda and vinegar.
We then changed one of the variables (most of us adding a lot more vinegar or baking soda) and conducted the experiment again. This time, the CO2 filled the bag and kept filling the bag until the bag couldn't hold anymore and... POP! Our bags popped open/exploded! Turns out gases need a lot of room!
Next Experiment ~ Making Ice Cream :)
