Rugby Success for Tahuna Boys
It was a great day in the sun at Bishopscourt this week with Year 7 boys and Year 8 boys both beating Balmacewen in their respective rugby finals. The Girls team had a great day and also had a lot of fun.
The Sassenachs Tournament is a highlight each year and this year was no exception. All students who were keen to represent the school were included in the squads for the day and everyone contributed to their teams success.
The girls team went close to winning within pool play but just missed out with a narrow loss. The girls are eager to keep working on their skills and their coach, Georgia Mason from the Otago Spirit is keen to come back to school and teach them some more skills. Players to stand out were Ella Gomez, Shai Bergerson and Zhia Mowat.
The Year 7 boys played fantastic round robin rugby against some touch teams in their group - John McGlashan and Kavanagh. They went into the finals against Balmacewen Intermediate a little hesitant having just witnessed their great win against Taieri College. The boys did really well using the whole width of the field and making good passages of play when it counted and eventually coming out on top with a hard fought win.
The Year 8 boys saved their best rugby for the second half of the final and a never say die attitude meant that they were able to overcome Balmacewen in golden point. This was a little controversial however as Jacob Murray's 100 percent goal kicking should of had the team winning in normal time.
There were far too many top performers to single out any one player but Michael Flanagan led the team from the front and scored a brilliant try to win the final.
Thank you to Mr Tunoka and Josh Buchan for coaching the boys teams and organising our entries.
