Here are some of the rules:

*You should not harvest the harakeke when you are pregnant.

*Never harvest harakeke in the dark or at night.

*Always wear safety gloves and use a sharp knife.

*Never stand on or over the harakeke.

*Always cut the leaves at a downwards angle at the base of the harakeke.

*Make sure that the leaves you want to cut are long, firm and straight.

*Always recite a karakia before you harvest harakeke.

*The gel inside the harakeke leaves can act as an antiseptic but you should always wash your hands after touching it.
