Tahuna Specialists

Students have all completed their first rotation of a specialist subject area. There has been much excitement and lots of great work already as students start a new subject area for Term 2.

Art:

With a new group of Year 7 students this term in Visual Art they are covering ' food art' as the PBL is about looking at chemical reactions and investigating science experiments. Students are learning about language within art through food, contour lines, contrast, and colour theory. Enjoy looking at the colourful results thus far.

Year 8 students are busy showing ways to use a pencil to highlight shading and colour through acrylic paint and water, diluting the strength of colour to show an overlapping grid that resembles gingham material.

E-Tech:

Students are getting ready for Robotics Electives and Robocup competitions.

Robots are following black lines and being programmed to perform different parts of a rescue of a 'victim' (coke can ) from a chemical spill (green square )The 3D printer is being well used as students learn the 'skills' to make their own projects.Always popular is any combination of goal shooting and 3D printed mini basketball netts and ballsOther students are making models / prototypes for their Electric Car project, lots of excitement with the arrival of our batteries and motors last week, kindly donated through Evolocity. Our teams are using the Lego and Epro8 equipment to make their models before starting on their actual racing car ready for the end of the year.

Food Technology:

Year 7 students have confidently completed their Food Tech licence and develop their skills to work safely in the kitchens. It has been great to see them understand some kitchen science as we activated yeast to make pizza dough. Ask them at home what gas we produced!

Year 8 students are extending their practical skills, with bread cases, passata and spaghetti, fruit turnovers and comparison testing of home made versus processed custard. They also completed a weetbix challenge. Later in the term we will begin our food design task.

Hard Materials:

A productive and exciting start to the hard materials programme. All students have had a extensive entry to workshop safety with classes focusing on hand tool usage along with safe working practice.

All students are progressing well and are discovering how difficult cuts and joints can be made in timber. Also how these processes can, and will effect the outcome of their project. Students achieve this through a technological modeling process.

Some really tidy and accurate work is being achieved by all and engagement is high..a fabulous start!
