My design - Whaia i te angitū: Strive for success

Piere Tapsell, an outstanding artist has gifted an amazing artwork to Tahuna to be used in school promotions. We really appreciate the hard work and hours of time he spent doing this.  Piere shares the meaning of his design below.

My design has many parts.

There are four ropes that each represents the house groups. Each of the colours are the house colours.

The manaia is the centre figure, which represents a hook (matau), and one of our school values, which is success. Matau, when combined with ranga, - mātauranga- also means knowledge.

We, the students, represented by the ropes, connect to the manaia, which is the hook.

A student’s journey is like the manaia or hook that is released into the sea. Depending on how deep you go into the sea or the deeper we focus on our goals, the bigger the fish or catch and the greater the success. Our success is determined by how hard we try including how we may also overcome difficulties. It is not just about reaching a goal that is important, but also the journey in getting there. The journey is your success because it is a journey of learning. It’s a journey of matauranga, of gaining knowledge and understanding.
