This is hard work!
Tahuna students taking core samples from the field.
On Friday during electives 25 Tahuna students were able to participate and help GNS geologists conduct field work at Tahuna Intermediate. During their visit Rose and Adam discussed with the students what they did as geologists and that the samples were being used to help identify the soil make up Dunedin. The team had taken samples from over 40 sites around the city!
The students participated in every part of the sampling process from turning the auger to take core samples to sifting through the actual samples looking for any precious materials. The samples were then bagged up and tagged before being sent of to a laboratory in Canada for further analysis.
This links directly with or science focus this term and also the Nature of Science strand form the curriculum. Students were amazed with what they discovered and the GNS team were very impressed with the Tahuna students knowledge and questioning skills.
