Taiopeka - Tahuna Kapa Haka

Read on to find out more about Taiopeka, our Tahuna Kapa Haka Rōpū

Taiopeka is the name of our Tahuna Kapa Haka Group. A brief translation of our beautiful name is the 'Coming together of the tides'. For our rōpū we relate to this through several ways staying true to its meaning. It is a place where new students to Tahuna who have come from our contributing schools connect, as do our Year 7 students with our Year 8 students.

All students from Tahuna are welcome to join Taiopeka. Our philosophy is to share Te Reo Maori me Tikanga, the Māori language and protocols, through the art of Kapa Haka. Concepts such as Kotahitanga, working as one, and Whanaungatanga, family and relationships, are shared.

Taiopeka is held during class time on a Friday. We do hold some after school practices that are not compulsory to attend, but certainly encouraged. This is where we play games, rehearse and work together. Students have a real sense of belonging in Taiopeka and we welcome new comers all throughout the year. The cost is $10 which covers afternoon teas at after school practices, gold coin donation into the Polyfest and costuming.

Our mahi goes towards a performance for the Otago Polyfest that will hopefully be back on in 2021. Tutors this year are Mrs Reddington, Matua Manuel, Mr Tait, Eb Paia who are very excited to be involved in 2021.

Notices will come home in the next few weeks. Please encourage your children to listen out to the notices and come along to meetings.
