TNIS Board of Trustees Position on the Removal of the Requirements to Give Effect to Te Tiriti.

A statement from the Board of Trustees.

Tēnā koutou katoa,

Despite recent changes to the way Te Tiriti o Waitangi is referenced in national education legislation, the Tahuna Normal Intermediate Board reaffirms our continued commitment to honouring Te Tiriti o Waitangi and working with Māori as tangata whenua.

Our school continues to uphold the principles of partnership, participation, and protection in a way that reflects our values of Respect, Creativity, Success, and Responsibility. Values that guide the aspirations and within our school and strengthen our relationship with mana whenua, Māori whānau, and our wider community.

We remain committed to:

  • Building genuine, transparent partnerships with whānau Māori and mana whenua

  • Protecting te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, local histories and cultural narratives within teaching and learning

  • Ensuring equitable opportunities and high expectations for all students, and

  • Creating an environment where identity, belonging, and cultural connectedness are central to student wellbeing and achievement

Regardless of legislative shifts, our enduring dedication to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and to fostering a school environment where all learners thrive remains unchanged.

Kā manaakitanga,

Steve Carr
