Year 8s Prepare to Become Tycoons at Upcoming Trading Day!
Financial Literacy Takes Center Stage
As the school year charges towards its conclusion, our Year 8 students aren't just winding down—they've been deeply engaged in some seriously valuable learning about Financial Literacy. Forget stale textbooks! This essential unit has been all about understanding how money works, from budgeting and saving to investing and making smart financial choices. The goal? To equip our students with the skills they need to navigate the real world as responsible, money-savvy adults.
Tahuna Trading Day: The Ultimate Business Challenge! 📈
The financial literacy learning will culminate on the 10th of December in the highly anticipated annual Tahuna Trading Day! This event is the perfect opportunity for students to put their newfound knowledge to the ultimate test.
Students will be tasked with an exciting challenge: Develop a product or service, market it, and sell it to their peers and teachers during a special market. From initial concept and calculating start-up costs to setting a profitable price and running an eye-catching stall, the students are responsible to do it all!
The Products: We anticipate the marketplace will be buzzing with creativity! Teams are currently brainstorming ideas ranging from delicious food items to unique products that catch the eye.
The Skills: Students will need to manage their inventory, create compelling advertisements, and use their tallying and budgeting skills on the fly. The air is sure to be thick with competitive but friendly entrepreneurial spirit as teams battle to become the day's top enterprise.
The preparation for this event is already teaching valuable lessons about market competition and strategic pricing as teams plan their sales strategy.
Looking Ahead: High School Orientation
While preparing for Trading Day, the Year 8 cohort is also shifting focus towards their final steps at Tahuna.
The past few weeks have included scheduled visits to local high schools, where students got a sneak peek at their future learning environments. They attended assemblies, met senior students, and toured the facilities, helping to ease the transition from intermediate to high school.
The Year 8 team encourages all students to discuss their orientation experiences with their whānau and to continue asking any questions they have as they prepare for this exciting next chapter!
As the year draws to a close, students can also look forward to their end-of-year celebrations, including the highly anticipated Year 8 Leavers Social and the Year 8 Fun Day, which will feature activities at Moana Pool and Ten Pin Bowling at Bowl Line.
