Year 7's
Matariki PBL is underway.
The Year 7 classes have been at Tūhura over the past couple of weeks, learning about Matariki. The students were split into two groups to study constellations and star mapping, with a focus on Matariki.
Students went to the planetarium to watch the Kai Tahu Creation story and see first-hand where the constellations would appear in the Dunedin sky. They also got to see just how many stars are in the Matariki cluster that aren't visible to the naked eye.
The second group worked to make a star map to see where the stars and constellations would be visible throughout the year. It was great seeing the students turning their maps to their birthdays to see what would be above their heads.
New learning for the students was the number of stars visible to the naked eye in the Matariki cluster and how it varies by location: for example, in Auckland, 7 stars are visible; in Dunedin, 9; and further south in Antarctica, 12.
On July 1st, the Year 7's will be hosting the Musselburgh Junior School to work through their PBL outcomes and celebrate Matariki. The same activities will be included in the whole school Matariki evening that night from 6:00-7:30pm.
