Exploring Nature and Tradition: Crafting Manu Tukutuku and Discovering Native Plants at Our School
Room 15 gets immersed in creativity and nature at school. We learnt to craft Manu tukutuku (kites) and explore NZ native plants in a vibrant hands-on experience.
This week Room 15 embarked on a fascinating journey of crafting Manu tukutuku, traditional kites, at our school while delving into the wonders of New Zealand native plants. Designing and constructing these intricate kites not only enabled us to appreciate Māori culture but also nurtured our creativity and patience. As we worked on shaping the frame, attaching the materials, and understanding the flight dynamics, we also honed our attention to detail and teamwork skills.
In addition, we explored the remarkable biodiversity of New Zealand through learning about its native flora. Mr J made this lesson come to life by helping us to identify and learn about some of the traditional uses of plants by Māori. It was interesting to walk around our kura and identify native plants, trying to decide what it's use might be. We also realised that early Māori had to experiment with and learn the properties of the plants around them, in order to maximise its use.
